I'm making it's own topic for this one, as I highly recommend everyone who has not read the books yet, to read them. The trilogy is also currently being made into movies, and the first one will be out in March 2012. I'm very excited
The three books in the series are: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, in that order. There will be 4 movies.
Short synopsis of the first book: "Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When her sister is chosen by lottery, Katniss steps up to go in her place."
MainstayPro has made a very good short movie of one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the first book. It was used as an audition piece. If you haven't read the first book, this is a spoiler.
If this peaks your interest, MainstayPro has made several shorts based on some of the characters in the books that are worth checking out, but to fully enjoy those you do need the story that the books provide you with.
Official trailer:
If nothing else, I hope you'll all catch the movies, and that we can use this thread for discussion of both the books if you feel inclined to read, and the movies as they come out

I'm definitely intrigued, Lilly.
Isn't Naya a fan of this book?

I definitely need to read those then. Maybe I can buy them for Christmas! I'll check Amazon.

Interesting. Have you read/watch "Battle Royale"? I don't know how this story develops but the initial panaroma is very alike. You may like it Lily.

Yes, Naya is a fan of the books, and has said she wants to play Johanna. A character that's introduced in the second book, and which she would be PERFECT for
I have seen Battle Royale, and the concept is very similar indeed. Did enjoy it, though the story is a bit more difficult to follow due to the japanese looking so alike, and their names so confusing. (Please don't hate me, I just can't tell them apart most of the time).

LOL But it's true. I found it hard to recognise the characters too. And that movie in particular has A LOT of characters so it's kind of extra hard.

Good, I'm not the only one And when it's so difficult to recognize the characters, it's just as difficult to feel for them, because you don't get to "know" them properly.
In The Hunger Games books, we only follow the POV of Katniss, so that's easy. You see everything through her eyes. That'll be different in the movies though, as that's just not possible in that format, but at least they'll be distinguishable, even if there's going to be quite a few characters in that one as well. And there's a bigger underlying story that develops than just participating in the games.

I'm a huge otaku, so I have no problem telling Japanese people apart, lol. And besides, they think we all look the same too.

So I have heard. I can't quite grasp it. But I guess it is the same for them, when they hear we think they all look alike. Perhaps it's a matter of exposure to it. If you're used to seeing movies and such with all japanese/chinese/asian/etc. (or vice versa for them), then it gets easier every time.

In spanish:
Los Juegos del Hambre (The Hunger Games) En Llamas (Catching Fire) Sinsajo (Mockingjay)
Elilenna, I'm glad I also read the books in english. I prefer it over my own language.

I've heard (in another TV show lol) that it's cientifically proven to be difficult for white people to tell black people apart, and vice-versa. And the same goes for Asian people and white people, etc..
It was a TV show (a good one, tho, The Good Wife), but I think it makes sense.
Anyway, I'm gonna check the books too. See if I can find here (in English, I avoid translations if I can).
Is the main actress for the film that girl from Winter's Bone?

Yes, that's her, Jennifer Lawrence. Have you seen Winter's Bone? I saw it because of her, and now I am reading the book

Yeah, I really liked Winter's Bone myself. Jennifer Lawrence is a really good actress. I've seen most of what she has been in, because naturally I had to see who she was when she was cast for THG. She's amazing. Especially with dramatic roles.
Absolutely LOVED her in a movie called Poker House. Such a strong performance.

I really enjoyed these books. Johanna ended up being my favorite character. She's totally the type of character I'm drawn to.

Me too. That damaged soul, bitchy and defensive, but ultimately nice underneath it all. I love Johanna. Hope we see much of her in the movies, and maybe get to know more of what happened to her after the rebellion.
I'm still dreaming of a book from Johannas POV. She was so interesting, I'd like to know what went on inside that head of hers.

I want to know what happened too. I really want to know her whole life. She's just fascinating to me. Dark and tortured is a major soft spot for me.

Couldn't agree more!
Casting for her must be well done, so they don't screw it up. My heart is really set on Naya though, but I'll try and love anyone they get

I picture Naya when I imagine Johanna at the moment. I pulling for her but I'm prepared for other options.

Fingers crossed for Naya. It'd be a dream come true!
I'm very curious about how the songs in the book will turn out, or even if they'll use the text from the books, or make new ones.
I really love these where fans have put the lyrics to melody, so thought I'd post them
